This week we got a chance to sit down with our February First Friday artist, Sonia Calderon, to find out more about her inspiration and challenges in her artistic process. Sonia, an abstract painter living in Santa Cruz, will be featured this February at Stripe with an art reception Friday, February 6th, from 5-9pm.

As an abstract painter, what do you find to be the most challenging part of your artistic process?

Making sure the colors don't bleed. It can be difficult working with oils in regards to keeping the colors clean and not muddled. Also, abstract art can be difficult to comprehend even by the artist. We tend to work with our subconscious mind. I can go with what I'm inspired by and how the environment affects me.

What is the most rewarding part?

Engaging with leaders in my profession.

If you could only create art with one color for the rest of your life, what color would you choose?

Pink! I also loves greens and whites.

Name 3 things that inspire your art.

Fashion! Chaos in nature and infrastructure, astounding emotion.

You can learn more about Sonia on her website and you can check out her art in person at Stripe during the month of February.
